Wilson Takes Altherm JCR YAMAHA To The Top
JULY 7, 2015: The fighting ANZAC spirit has probably never been
stronger in the Australasian motocross community than right
now.
With help from Yamaha on both sides of the Tasman Sea, Jay
Wilson surged to the top of the MX2 (250cc) class at Sunday's sixth
round of 10 in this season's Australian Motocross Championships at
Raymond Terrace, in New South Wales.
The New Zealand MX2 champion from Tweed Heads, near Coolangatta,
took his Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing YZ250F to qualify second fastest
at Raymond Terrace and then backed that up with 3-2 results on
Sunday, good enough for him to finish second overall on the day,
just five points behind the day's winner, fellow Australian Caleb
Ward.
But, most significantly, was that this result boosted Wilson
from third overall to the top of the MX2 championship standings,
now five points clear of fellow Yamaha star Luke Clout, the
defending champion and the rider who was series leader at the start
of the weekend.
With former world No.2 and multi-time New Zealand motocross
champion Josh Coppins to mentor him, Wilson has achieved much in
the past year.
He won the New Zealand 250cc supercross title at the start of
the season and then rocketed away with the New Zealand MX2
motocross crown just a few months later.
Now he is on top in his own country too and, with just eight
races remaining to wrap up that championship, he could well be
bringing more silverware into the Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team
enclosure before the end of the year.
"We have had good support from Yamaha in both Australia and New
Zealand to make this happen," said Motueka's Coppins. "And Jay
brought with him his own personal sponsors too. He has gone beyond
the call of duty to enable the JCR Yamaha team to spread its wings
and gain traction in Australia.
"It was natural for us to carry on after his Kiwi campaign and
help him achieve in Australia too. He has spent the past two weeks
training with me in Motueka and was also instrumental in the Nelson
Motorcycle Club finishing runner-up at the recent Battle of the
Clubs Motocross in Taupo. As an individual, he won his MX2 class at
that event too."
Wilson, Coppins and the Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team now
prepares for round seven in Australia, set for Shepparton in
Victoria on July 19.
